Maintaining Healthy Hydration

Maintaining Healthy Hydration

Hydration is an essential aspect of optimal health. Maintaining and replenishing hydration levels in the body is vital for overall joint and brain protection, muscle and nerve function, immune, mood, and gut health.

Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium and potassium that carry an ionic charge, and allow cells, nerves and muscles to function properly. Electrolytes also play an essential role in how well the kidneys process water for hydration. A simple way to get extra electrolytes is to add a pinch of quality sea salt to your water. This will provide an electrical charge that will allow your cells to better communicate with one another. Make an effort to drink 8-16 ounces of water or herbal tea before your morning coffee or caffeinated beverage (such as black tea or matcha). Caffeinated beverages are quite dehydrating, but can easily be balanced out by drinking plenty of water and mineral rich herbal teas throughout the day.

Drinking herbal teas are a great way to stay cool and hydrated throughout the hot summer months. They are high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, which help to play a role in our body’s ability to absorb and maintain hydration levels.

Herbal iced teas can be a great alternative to alcoholic and or sugar-filled beverages as they are dehydrating, inflammatory, and heating to the system. Herbal teas are delicious, refreshing, contain medicinal properties, beneficial vitamins and minerals, and some even provide a cooling effect on the body.

Some refreshing herbs to use in  herbal iced teas for hydration include, but are not limited to:

Spearmint or Peppermint - Cools, tones, and relieves bloating and digestive upset.

Lemon balm - A member of the mint family, lemon balm is cooling and supports the body in sweating to release toxins.

Hibiscus - Wonderfully refreshing with its sweet, tart flavor profiles and is packed full of antioxidants.

Chamomile - An anti-inflammatory and heat-reducing  herb. Pain relieving, promotes skin healing, aids in headache relief, is calming and aids in sleep.

Rose - Rose is calming and cooling, but also contains astringent (drying) properties, so only use in small amounts.  It adds a delicious, fresh floral flavor to cooling teas.

Honeybush - Anti-inflammatory, contains plenty of essential nutrients and antioxidants.

Our Sunnyside Iced Tea blend is a great way to stay hydrated and cool throughout the summer.
