Our Compostable Packaging

We are excited to announce the launch of our new vs 2.0 compostable packaging, proudly manufactured in Canada. The upgraded packaging features a thicker lining, providing enhanced stability and durability. We have also incorporated a window to allow a clear view of the beautiful loose tea inside. This transition represents our commitment to sustainability, quality, and innovation, and we are sure that our customers will appreciate the new look, and feel of our "new" compostable packaging.
Our Compostable Packaging

As a small business rooted in the values of wholesome plants, organic farming, and ethical sourcing, it has always been our priority to align our practices with our earthy, loving, and caring ideals. We firmly believe that our actions today shape the future for ourselves and our children.

Recognizing the environmental impact of plastic consumption and disposal, we have continuously challenged ourselves to be a forward-thinking company. We understand that prioritizing the bottom line alone is not sustainable. That's why we have made a conscious decision to put our future first.

In our quest for a more sustainable packaging solution, we have sought materials that can be composted back into the earth. We have also made it a point to partner with local companies that share our principles, ensuring that our packaging is not just a sales pitch but a genuine commitment to change.

We understand that this eco-friendly packaging comes at a higher cost, but we firmly believe it is worth it. By leading the way and encouraging other businesses to adopt alternative disposable packages, we can drive the packaging industry to invest more in research and innovation. We truly believe that we can be the change we want to see.

Our journey towards a more sustainable future is ongoing, and we are committed to continuous learning and improvement. We are open to feedback and collaboration, as we believe that teamwork and effective communication are essential in driving positive change.

Thank you for being a part of our mission to create a better world for ourselves, our children, and future generations.

At Bush Berry, we are committed to continuously improving our packaging and reducing our environmental footprint in the industry. As part of this commitment, we have recently switched packaging suppliers based on factors such as location (USA supplier vs Canadian) and quality (films used and window option). The following information applies to all our current packaging offerings however some may look a bit different.

What Sets Our Compostable Pouch Apart ?

Unlike many pouches available on the market that are made from petroleum-based plastics with enzyme additives, our packaging materials are fully compostable which means they will not break down into micro plastics. We choose these compostable packages because they are designed to break down naturally and safely, without leaving harmful residues behind.

Where Can Our Packaging be Composted ?

Our packaging is designed to decompose in your backyard! The films and inks are certified for home composting, while the zippers and valves are certified for industrial composting. To compost at home, simply cut off the zipper and valve (if applicable) and dispose of them separately.

Home Compost Vs Industrial Compost

The main difference between home and industrial composting lies in the conditions. Home composting, exposed to fluctuating temperatures, may take 8-12+ months for decomposition. In contrast, industrial composting facilities use controlled processes with added heat, oxygen, and microbes, enabling faster decomposition in less than 6 months. For more information on composting, check out the Standards for Compostability EN 13432.

Is The Packaging City Green Bin Safe?

At the moment, our compostable packages cannot be placed in your green bin. While our packaging is compostable, it closely resembles regular plastics, making it difficult for composting experts to differentiate. As a result, it often gets sorted out and sent to the landfill. Municipal facilities are also not equipped to handle items that require more time to break down.

For now, we recommend composting our packaging at home or taking it to a private facility that accepts compostable packaging for industrial composting. However, there is hope on the horizon. Recent legislative activity is paving the way for standard practices in the industry, promising a brighter future for compostable packaging.

What Happens If It Ends Up In The Landfill?

In landfills, even organic matter struggles to fully break down due to the lack of suitable conditions for degradation. That's why landfills eventually need to be capped and cannot be reused. However, the positive aspect is that compostable materials do not leach harmful chemicals like plastics do during this time. They also avoid becoming microplastics that pollute our waters. Additionally, compostable packaging, made from renewable resources and sustainable forestry initiatives, has a cleaner pre-lifecycle footprint compared to plastics.

How Long Will It Take To Compost My Package?

Our packaging is designed to decompose in approximately 8-12 months when composted at home. When taken to an industrial composting facility, it can decompose in 6 months or less. Rest assured, our compostable films are verified by a third party for disposal in both home and industrial composting facilities.

Why Do our Bags Look Like Plastic?

Our compostable packaging features clear film printed using HP Indigo Digital Technology, ensuring exceptional-quality packaging in a sustainable way. The inks used are certified for compostable packaging. The Matte film is Certified Wood Pulp Cellulose. With our compostable packaging, you don't have to compromise on quality or sustainability.

How Long Does The Packaging Preserve The Tea?

Our compostable packaging preserves the freshness of our tea, comparable to conventional plastic packaging. However, it's important to note that compostable packaging has a shorter lifespan due to its natural material base but can remain shelf-stable for up to 2 years under controlled conditions.
